Beyond The Classroom
The classroom is a place in which children further their education, express creativity, and challenge themselves through critical thinking and learning. The way that children learn is not a one size fits all formula. At Excelsior academy, they challenge the traditional learning methods and teaching styles, creating an environment that nurtures each and every student. The design for the classroom does just the same, going beyond the standard 4 walls and door. The goal of the classroom is to not only break the conventional geometries that form a traditional classroom but also break the barrier that separates the classroom from the rest of the school. In the design of the classrooms the front walls are made completely of glass, this is retractable and serves to open up the classroom to the school. Each classroom features a variety of seatings and areas allowing for diversity in learning as well as catering to the needs of each student. Going beyond the traditional rows of desks, the classroom features group or active learning areas, focus learning or lecture areas, and individual study areas. Having diversity within the classroom allows for children with ADHD to find an area in which they feel comfortable, eliminating any environmental distraction. The furnishings and construction of the classroom is completed with proper anthropometrics in mind. This specific classroom is tailored for children among the ages of five and six. As a whole, Excelsior Academy works to integrate technology based learning into all of its spaces. The classroom is no exception to this as it features interactive smart boards around the classroom that are hung at heights based on proper anthropometric data for children within the age range set forth. The focus area is also centered around a large interactive smart board that allows for more intuitive teaching. As a whole the classrooms are designed to be inclusive of all students both physically and mentally different. The design focuses on diversity in learning as well as the physical environment, creating a space that is tailored to the needs of each and every student.
